The good and bad design of everyday things

12 October 2022 UX

Image this: is a hot summer day without wind, and you just back home want to treat yourself, what would you do immediately?

I bet most of us will simply go to the freezer and take out a box of ice cream (if there is 😜) and enjoy the delicious. But have you ever encountered this after you just open the lid and want to dig without waiting (see photo below)?

Photo: surprise on an ice cream package

I was not expected this at all. This made me doubt firstly and think “wait, am I opening an ice cream lid or a lottery???” I felt really surprised and kind of lucky as they said, and I don’t even know if the signature really means something to me from a CEO of a milk producer.😂 But it just works and made my day. I have to admit that this is the 90% of the reason why I want to write this post (and they didn’t pay me, it’s all voluntary).

And you are right, after opening this one, I went back and open another one, and as expected surprised, I got a new reward: “Todays Weather” (see photo below). I don’t know how you feel, but I did laugh hard when I read it. I feel the thoughtfulness of this band of ice cream, and of course, I will buy more from this band if it tastes as good as others (and yes, it tastes good, just wish they have more healthy versions).

Good / Bad designs

Sewn bag

Have you ever seen this type of sewn bag (see the blue part of the photo below)? It is usually used for packing rice.

I never really know how to open it without using scissors, and don’t really know why people still use cotton thread which annoyed me, since I need to remove it to sort plastic bags. Until I really understand how it was supposed to be opened, when I came across a forum where someone shared how to open this type of bag without scissors. This totally changed how I evaluate this type of bag. If people know how to open it by it default design way, then it is actually a good design, but I bet most of us will just confused as me before.
